Valentine’s Day…the day when single girls can indulge themselves in pink cakes and heart sprinkles, blissfully ignorant of the explosion of red heart balloons and giant teddies in shop windows everywhere…
Today, I thought I was being quite creative with my little idea!
Roses are red,
violets are blue,
I’ll bake them in a cupcake,
just for you!
I bought a really nice violet extract which I added to my usual vanilla sponge recipe, and then topped this cute little cake off with a rose extract buttercream.
THEN…I wanted to try those bake-it-in-a-cake hearts that everyone is going crazy over. Well. It would have worked if I had put a little less cake batter into the case…or maybe a smaller heart?
At this point everything seemed to be going according to plan, but then to my complete disappointment, the hearts flipped up in the oven with the rising cake batter!
So technically, these are still heart-in-a-cake cupcakes, just not in the right orientation!
I decorated them with cream cheese frosting and crumbled cake crumbs from the leftover sponge I had from the middles.
Happy Valentine’s Day when it comes!
